Blocked drains are tough to deal with, they are messy and unhygienic. However, you can troubleshoot the issues to prevent them from recurring. Here we will list the causes that result in blocked drains: Dirt and in most cases, hair result in clogging, especially in the bathrooms. They block the inner wall of the drainage pipe and prevent the water from flowing out.
Troubleshooting:
To prevent blockage, you must clean the drain stopper.
Use a drain plunger to block an overflowed drain of the sink or tub.
Even if that fails, clean the drain elbow. You must clean the drain stoppers to prevent blocked drains.
Many times, people flush non-biodegradable objects down the drainage system like sanitary napkins, ear swabs, dental floss, diaper, and wipes, etc, this results in blocked drains.
A plunger is an important tool for cleaning the drain clog. Some plungers shoot water forcibly to clear out the drain pipes. Some also have bacterial coatings on them.
You can use some hand-powered and cheap drain auger. It reaches 2-5 feet inside the toilet’s drain pipe and retrieves clogged items or break the items to clear the path for water to pass through.
If you do not want to suffer the hassle that blocked drains cause, throw the waste into a dustbin rather than the drains. Also, make sure you clean the drains on a regular basis. Cooking oils can also clog up your kitchen sink drainage pipe Soap crumbs and some un-dissolved food particles can also cause blocked drains.
Run hot water through the kitchen sink drain to clear out the clogs. Then put a few drops of dish detergent down the drain and pour hot water again. Use the plunger after a few minutes and drain down the hot water.
If that fails to clear the blocked drain, you can use a chemical drain opener but that too with caution.
Dispose of kitchen oils and grease after they get non-greasy by putting them into a disposable bag and then sealing it. Throw the disposable bag into the garbage bin. Oil or grease should be cleaned with hot water and dishwasher on a regular basis
If the clogging continues, you must hire a plumber. They will guide you on steps that you must follow to prevent clogging. In case, there is an issue with the drainage system, they will get that repaired. When enough air passes through the drains, the wastes and water drain out properly. Your waste in the toilet clears out quickly after you flush when there is good venting. You may hear some gurgling sound when the toilet flush is triggered if the venting doesn’t help to let enough amount of air in. Venting prevents sewer gases from building up to dangerous levels inside a residential area.
Check if anything is blocking the opening of the vent pipe. Birds or other small animals can build nests on the unenclosed vent pipes h. All of these result in a blocked drain.
Check the gulp valves which are present on the other r end of the drain line. These valves prevent the sewer gasses from escaping and let the air in through the vent pipe for enough suction. You may need to replace that if you don’t hear any gulping sound of water when it is sucked through the gulp valve. Thus, with little more care and attention a blocked drain can be prevented. We just need to follow the above-mentioned steps to overcome the issue of blocked drains.
