Cooling Your House, The Smart Way: Split System

Summer is coming, and unless you're tucked away somewhere in the hills or the mountains, you will realize what a tyrant the heat can be, especially for people living in arid lands or places of high humidity. Finding a way to cope with the heat is a must to avoid any potential cases of heat-related problems.

Air Conditioning systems and split systems

Ever since the invention of the air conditioning system human beings have been grateful for its ability in controlling a room’s temperature especially in the scorching summer heat, however, Air conditioning systems have developed a lot since its inception and now there are several variants and systems available in the market for one to purchase. Although having options is a good thing as it can make one quite indecisive in making choices, especially when one lacks knowledge in the said field.

Split systems

A split system is an air conditioning system that has the compressor and condenser as outdoor units. This includes an indoor unit that contains an air handler. The two units are connected with the assistance of a line set, the two units contain refrigerant tubing made of copper, drain for condensation, and a cable. This is completely different from a traditional packaged unit, which houses all the components in one mainframe or in window units which have fans, coils, and compressors in a box mounted in a wall.

Benefits to the air conditioning split system

  1. Installing: unlike packaged units, which are clunky and large due to all its components placed in one large box, installing split systems required much lesser work to get it installed, you do not require duct tape, all you need is a small opening of 3 inches in diameter for the connector between the outdoor and indoor units to pass through. Once these are finalized all you need is a location to mount your split system and access to an electric outlet.

  2. Energy saver:  As compared to packaged units, the ductless design enables them to avoid leakage in cooling energy which for normal package systems results in a 30% loss due to leakage. This makes the split system much more energy-efficient.

  3. Decor blend: very flexible in its installation indoors, you can mount them on the wall, suspend them from ceilings, also many manufacturers offer several stylish and sophisticated jackets for the system which can make it very aesthetically appealing and add a unique taste to your home decor.

  4. Quiet time: capable of functioning as quiet as 19 decibels, the split system is much quieter than most of the other systems making it an ideal choice for people looking for that quiet and comfortable sleep at night.

  5. Safety: window systems require a large hole; this can prove to be a security risk as intruders can make their way into the house. Alternatively, ductless indoor systems however only require a small hole for the connector, which is not a security risk at all in comparison to the large hole of a window system.

  6. Zoning: in traditional systems, you would have only one thermostat for the entire house, this can be frustrating as some rooms might differ in temperature from the others due to location, etc. It is here the split system shines as in the system you can set up the separate thermostats for each room which in the long run is very useful in saving energy and saving money in return.

  7. Renovation concern: Ductless systems are great for renovation especially for homes where ducting is not a possibility due to the house being old, or houses with poor distribution, as well as houses that are heated via electricity or homes with hydronic heating.

Do remember all the factors when you are thinking of getting a split systems. In case of any doubts, ask an expert you know.
