How to Paint Marine Plywood Surface Properly?

Marine plywood refers to a type of plywood that is waterproof in form and is used in places where there is water supply – such as in bathrooms, kitchens, factories and shipping industry. Such a type of plywood must adhere to some principles, such as waterproof glue that should be used for gluing the veneers, but vacuums or voids must be avoided strictly when veneers are glued, and the inside surface of the veneers should be of the most superior quality. However, to enhance its durability, marine grade plywood must be painted by following these steps.

Sand the surface The process is as follows

  1. Get a Sand paper. Prior to painting the surface or applying the layer of marine grade plywood, you should sand the surface. This will help get rid of any flaws from the wood and make it easier for primer to stick to its surface.

  2. Once you are done, wipe off the entire sawdust. It is a good idea to use a piece of damp cloth for wiping purposes.

  3. Let the wood dry for some time before going ahead. You may also try using a tack cloth to wipe the surface.

Apply a coat of primer In case you are making use of marine plywood, which is likely to be exposed to water – such as in-home exteriors – you need to make use of any of the latex-based paints. As compared to oil-based paints, these are extremely long-lasting. The wood will expand and contract, without cracking the paint. First, you must apply a thin coat of latex-based primer onto the marine plywood. Allow it enough time to get dry and then lightly sand it. Remember that you should sand only enough to make the surface slightly rough. When you do this, the paint will bond strongly with the primer. Use the tack cloth to wipe off the sawdust again before you proceed with the paint job.

Make a careful choice of paint It is up to you as to the kind of paint that you would like to use over the marine plywood surface, as well as what purpose the wood will serve for you. With gloss, you can get the toughest finish for any type. However, there is a problem in the sense that it will also make the flaws easily noticeable. Semi-gloss is the most practical choice. The finish will be almost as hard as gloss, and any flaws remaining on the wood surface will be covered. Make sure that you use a latex-based paint on the latex-based primer.

Use proper

methods Begin with the application of a thin paint coat. You do not have to sand the surface between the coats. Let it just dry for some time, and the process should take just 2 – 3 hours, followed by the application of another thin paint coat. Two paint coats will be enough in most cases. However, if you like, you may add another coat for additional protection. Although you can spray paint the marine plywood, you can get a thinner and better coverage if you use a roller or a brush to apply the paint. Starting painting from the top and proceed from one side to another. It will let you paint in any drips while moving your way down the surface. Before you start painting, do not apply a lot of paint on the brush. Otherwise, it will lead to too much dripping.

Re-paint as required Your paint job is supposed to last for some years, although it depends on what you will be using the wood for and where you will keep it. If it is exposed to more weather elements, it will have to be renewed with more regularity. You need to regularly inspect your marine plywood to know if it is worn out.
