Importance of Regular Car Service

Vehicles are machines, and machines need to undergo maintenance. A lot of people though try to save money on car service. They think that taking your car to the shop regularly isn’t a necessity. But the truth is, your vehicle goes through a lot. Even when you are not driving it regularly, parts can undergo wear and tear; and engine oil can become old and less effective, and need changing. Taking your car for regular servicing isn’t a choice; it’s practical advice. Why regular car service:

  1. Save on car repair bills Vehicle parts regularly undergo wear and tear. If the wear and tear is not fixed at intermittent levels, the parts can go bad and ultimately need replacement. Maintaining your car parts regularly is a lot cheaper than having them replaced; unless you go for generic parts, which are not a very good option. When replacing parts in your car, always ask the mechanic for authentic OEM parts. They are thoroughly tested, have a longer lifespan, and improve your car’s performance. When you go for car service at regular intervals, the mechanic can identify potential problems before they exacerbate. Thus, you get to prevent expensive car repair bills.

  2. Prolong the life of your car Regular car service means you get more out of your vehicle. Even simple things like engine oil at suggested intervals can improve the fuel efficiency of your car. When the parts of your car are maintained at regular intervals, they perform optimally for a longer period of time, thus prolonging the life of your car.And since they perform optimally, they improve your car’s fuel efficiency, which means you save on hefty petrol bills annually.

  3. Increase your car’s resale value A car that runs nicely is bound to fetch more dollars than a car that needs extensive repair jobs. Making sure you go for car service at suggested intervals can help to keep your vehicle in find working condition, which can drastically improve its resale value.

Tips for car service:

  1. Oil change Oil is a lubricant. In a car, it prevents friction, and neutralizes acid produced by combustion gases. Thus, essentially, it prevents rusting and corrosion of parts. It is therefore necessary to change engine oil at recommended intervals. You can find the recommendation in your car’s manual. It could either be according to mileage, or according to time interval, whichever comes first. When changing engine oil, make sure you get the correct grade of oil that is recommended with your car. Other than that, make sure you don’t exceed the maximum recommended limit of the oil. Too much of anything and everything is bad, even oil.

  2. Check tyres You don’t just need to check them for pressure, although that is important too. You can find the recommended pressure for your tyres in your car manual. However, tyres can indicate other problems in your car. For instance, if you find unusual wear patterns in them, it usually signifies alignment problems. Similarly, if you notice that the steering wheel is shaking under your hand, you should get wheel alignment checked by a professional. During extremely hot weather, you should get the tyre pressure checked every couple of weeks.

  3. Batteries Batteries in a car should ideally be replaced every three to four years. If you drive around a lot, battery replacement should be even sooner. Even when you are not going for a replacement, check the connections. One, they should be tight and secure. Two, there shouldn’t be any carbon build up on them. Carbon hampers the performance of your car.
